What Is A Control Panel? 

A website hosting control panel is an online interface that the hosting company provides to customers in order to allow them to manage their hosted services, as well as hosted services they may administer or resell. Control panels typically have modules with different functions. These functions include server log access, email account configuration, records of disk space and bandwidth use, database management, statistics viewing, and more. Extra modules may include bulletin boards, chat, image gallery, guestbook, and shopping cart. Plesk supports all these including, in a change from earlier versions, the guestbook.

Some web hosting control panels are free and open source, while others, like Plesk, are proprietary. The control panels run on one or more of the standard server operating systems: Linux, Windows, and Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD). Plesk runs on all three. Control panels may or may not allow access through FTP, Anonymous FTP, or the terminal, and Plesk allows all three, accepting terminal interaction through both SSH (Secure Shell) and Java applets. Like most, if not all, of its counterparts, Plesk supports antivirus, antispam, and forwarding for emails. Plesk also supports Apache web servers and MySQL databases, and the programming languages PHP, Perl, and Python, making it capable of working with a variety of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python) installations. 

Plesk for Linux is among the most popular control panels, along with cPanel,  DirectAdmin, ServerCP, and H-Sphere. Although CPanel is more popular and has more features, Plesk is considered easier to learn, while H-Sphere is considered the most difficult as well as the one with the most advanced features.

Some web hosts may have plans that require a Parallels Plesk Panel. An example is the "Assisted Service" version of the Value Linux CentOS VPS (Virtual Private Server) plan at GoDaddy. If Assisted Service is not selected, the customer has a choice of a variety of Parallel Plesk Panels, configured by the number of domains they can manage, an unlimited Plesk panel, or the specialty Parallels Small Business Panel, or alternatively, cPanel unlimited.

There is, however, a second meaning of Plesk Web Hosting.
